First Steps Nursery is an independently run day nursery in Yeovil, supporting local families for over 30 years. As a local digital agency, they approached Lolly for help with a new website that met Ofsted requirements, felt more modern, and made it easier for parents (and prospective parents) to find the information they need.
Their existing site had served them well for many years, but like many long-standing organisations, it had started to feel a little dated. It was time for something that felt more them, whilst being intuitive, easier to navigate, and much clearer in how it communicated from the first enquiry all the way through the nursery journey.
From the start, it was important the website felt warm, welcoming and full of personality. For many families, it’s their first time looking at childcare options and as parents ourselves, we know how overwhelming it can be finding the right setting for your child: fun, safe, educational and genuinely caring.
As with all educational settings, sensitivities around photography can often be a challenge, as well as quickly feeling out of date. The client was keen to not to rely heavily on stock imagery, so we introduced playful illustrations throughout the design to bring the site to life in a way that still felt authentic and very ‘First Steps’.
These were such a hit, we were delighted to support with a refreshed logo too that matched the illustrative style. This helped bring everything in line, while still keeping the familiarity and warmth that families already associate with First Steps.
Alongside the design work, we also updated the website copy to reflect the nursery’s own tone of voice – friendly, informative and reassuring. We made sure key information was clear and easy to find for both current parents and those discovering the nursery for the first time, including facilities, outdoor space, learning experiences and a helpful FAQs section covering all things we would be curious about as parents. There’s something especially rewarding about working with local businesses to tell their story, and reflect the care, energy and commitment they bring every day.
